Coping with the Changing Climate in a Healthy Way

For most of us, this is an unprecedented time in our lives. The environment is changing every day and even as I write this post, we are learning new information. It’s completely reasonable to feel overwhelmed and confused. Anxiety feeds on uncertainty and we are definitely in the midst of many “unknowns” right now.

But worry and panic are not doing anything good for your health - mentally or physically. So how do we manage these feelings and re-direct our energy in a positive way?

At this point, we are all taking the necessary precautions advised by our health officials and local government - listening to their advice in terms of safety is crucial. Stay on top of these recommendations and use your best judgement.

In doing this, we can now look at the opportunities this crisis has given us. That’s right - we can actually flip this upside-down and find the positives. There is always, always light to be found in darkness.

This can be a chance to re-evaluate your health and fitness goals, focus on self improvement, spend time with your family and practice gratitude.

Is there an online course you’ve been putting off? There are so many online certifications, workshops and seminars you can attend virtually. I have taken a few continuing education courses myself in order to keep my certifications current!

Remember puzzles? Not the iPhone app kind but real, dining room table-sized puzzles? This is a super fun way to spend time with your quarantined family and doesn’t require an internet connection (well, except maybe to order it on Amazon). Give it a try & exercise your mind!

Speaking of exercise and your mind … guided audio meditations are another great way to relax and quiet that mental chatter. I even teach a few on Playbook and Simple Habit! I find that even simple breathing exercises are helpful too. Try sitting quietly with your eyes closed and inhaling to a count of 3, holding that breath for 3 and exhaling for another 3 counts. Do this as many times as you need, throughout your day and you will feel the difference, I promise.

If you are among those who are stockpiling food, keep in mind those items that are best for boosting your immune system and supporting your health. This is the time to experiment with new recipes, spend time on meal preparation and be mindful when it comes to eating comfort foods. A snack here and there is fine but you are likely not moving as much so just remember to be aware of your portions.

Speaking of moving and intentional exercise - this is where you have so many choices. You’ve probably been inundated by Instagram and Facebook posts showing “at-home workouts” and ways to sneak in exercise without going to the gym. Do not discount the power of working out at home! My business is built on helping people achieve their goals without going anywhere.

When I created Fresh Start Fitness geared towards people going through life transitions, I had NO idea how relevant it would become for all of us. This program was designed to make you feel like part of a community. Kind-of a “wellness support group” to guide you on your journey to good health. My goal is for you to feel supported and motivated throughout this program and the challenges we are all facing together. You don’t need a lot of space or fancy equipment. All you need is your computer and some focused attention. I will provide the motivation, the workouts and the nutrition guidance you need to take the next step (or the first step) in making fitness part of your lifestyle.

Fresh Start Fitness will be available for download on March 19th! Now, more than ever, we all need a routine to follow. I hope you will make Fresh Start Fitness part of yours.
